Named for Joseph Brant, an important Mohawk leader, soldier, farmer and slave owner, Brantford, ON is located on the Grand River in traditional territory of the Neutral, Mississauga and Haudenosaunee peoples. The area began to grow as the Hamilton and London Road was improved upon in the 1820s and was a stop on the Underground Railroad from the 1830s onward, becoming home to hundreds of African Americans who fled from slavery.
