Founded in 1795 by Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, Simcoe, ON began as a collection of mills, which were later burned down by American troops in 1814. By the mid-1800s, Simcoe had two gristmills, two sawmills, a brewery, two distilleries, a foundry, a fulling mill, nine stores, six taverns, two druggists, a bank and many tradesmen in a town of about 1,400 people, becoming the county seat of Norfolk County.
Tourism is a big part of the economy of Simcoe, which features 50 hotels and bed and breakfast properties within a reasonable driving distance of Simcoe’s downtown core, the Norfolk Golf and Country Club established in 1895, Clifton Park along Dingle Creek and Lynnwood Park beside Crystal Lake.
